Can you sell a pen? This is one of the most popular questions asked at sales job interviews.
Sales development is an emerging field found at the intersection of marketing and sales that helps companies find and engage with new customers. Sales Development Representatives (SDRs) specialize in discovering new potential clients, thus contributing significantly to the sales pipeline. They are key in helping tech companies remain relevant in the ever-evolving landscape of the tech industry — a complex playing field with very high-value deals, multiple stakeholders and a long sales journey.
Ronald David, Associate Inside Sales Manager at EPAM, can confidently say “yes” to selling not only a pen but a variety of products and services. Ron started his career in telemarketing in Sri Lanka by selling pens to customers in the UK, which was instrumental in his learning to talk to various stakeholders. The most important thing he learned was building rapport with people regardless of their seniority in a company. It helped him to overcome his natural shyness and gave him a self-confident attitude.
He then switched to the hospitality industry and worked as a revenue manager, gaining experience in forecasting and eventually enrolled at the University of Wales to complete his MBA. After working in the hospitality sector and the sales department across a variety of industries, such as robotics and conference organizing, he realized his passion lies in sales development.
Ronald, who is building a team of dedicated SDRs in Budapest, Hungary, enjoys bringing new and young talent onto sales teams and seeing how the collaborations unfold. SDRs need to be passionate, quick learners who can open doors for the business. He believes in providing robust training and continuous development opportunities to ensure his team stays at the top of their game.
“I value a collaborative environment where each SDR can contribute their unique strengths to drive success. By fostering a culture of enthusiasm and innovation, I aim to build a dynamic team that not only meets but exceeds sales targets.”
