Open Source

Leverage the power of the global open source community to deliver better and faster.

Open source can provide a competitive advantage when properly consumed and managed.

Open source software powers our modern society. Your car, your smart phone, your TV — all are enabled by source code that can be used, studied, changed and distributed for any purpose. With the right processes, tooling, governance, culture and strategy in place, open source can accelerate your platforms and capabilities.

Backed by our engineering DNA, our integrated consulting practice and strong commitment to open source, EPAM can modernize the way you manage open source to ensure sustained business value while balancing acceptable risk. Whether you are new to open source or have decades of experience, we can help you make valuable, informed decisions on how best to leverage, consume and contribute to open source.

Our Core
Focus Areas

Open Source Strategy & Programs

To maximize the value of open source, you need sound strategies and policies to guide your efforts. Our team not only has the expertise in strategy and advisory, but also in defining and implementing the right processes, tooling and training so your teams gain the benefits of open source while minimizing risks. We bring a multidisciplinary team of consultants, designers and engineers to create and support open source programs that level up your organization’s open source culture and capabilities.

Open Source Process & Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) Automation

Automation is essential to scale your open source efforts but the open source or commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) tooling landscape is complex and vast. Our team can help you select the right tools based on your unique needs, build processes to perform open source compliance and InnerSource checks, and contribute to and create an open source inventory by producing and consuming SBOM. If you prefer to build your processes based on open source tooling, we also offer a wide range of services around the OSS Review Toolkit (ORT), which delivers FOSS policy automation and orchestration built by various open source leaders including EPAM. No matter what tool works best for your business, we help you use open source at scale and speed while staying safe, respecting licenses, enabling upstream sustainability and making the life of your engineers easier.

Contribution, Migration & Operational Support

Open source is likely already an essential part of your organization’s technology stack in more ways than you realize. Your teams might require a feature within an open source project but don’t have the skills or time to bring it to life. By contributing to open source, your team could unveil potential market opportunities or future product ideas. Our team of developers, testers and data scientists with deep engineering expertise and a true passion for open source are here to help you by contributing directly to the open source projects you depend upon. If you are interested in switching from proprietary to open source solutions, we also offer a series of migration services and operational support services, so your business-critical open source software runs smoothly and efficiently.

Open Source Project Releases

Publishing a proprietary software project as open source requires more than applying a license and uploading the code to GitHub. We help you open source code or processes, so the released project has the best chances for success from project creation through to ongoing maintenance and community engagement.

Open Source Maturity Assessment

Your landscape, people, process and technologies are all essential to optimizing your open source capabilities. With our proven methodology and framework customized for your unique business, we evaluate your open source maturity level and provide a report of key issues and recommendations. From there, we can work together with your team to define an open source roadmap for your organization so you can ensure your teams, processes and people are optimized for success.

EPAM’s Commitment to Open Source

Accessibility to everyone inspires technological innovation, resulting in better software and stronger communities. Through the investments of time and resources, EPAM is committed to building a brighter digital future with open source projects.

01

Innovation Through Collaboration

EPAM supports and is committed to the free software philosophy and views the open source approach as a powerful development methodology, inviting collaboration with like-minded developers around the world.

Our deep understanding of open source enables us to advise and support our customers on their own open source adoption, growth and organizational maturity journeys through innovations to mindset, culture and the business as a whole.

02

Open Source Contributor Index

The Open Source Contributor Index (OSCI), designed and maintained by EPAM, helps track which commercial organizations contribute the most to open source. By ranking overall contributions to open source, the OSCI defines who the active contributors are and who is currently participating within the community.
